What is IPPC Fumigation? Why Is It Required for Export Packaging?
IPPC fumigation is an international standard (ISPM 15) established by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) — all solid wood packaging materials for imported and exported goods must undergo fumigation treatment and be marked with the IPPC stamp to eliminate potential pests and diseases. Simply put: solid wood pallets and crates exported abroad must undergo IPPC fumigation. If not done and discovered by customs, the goods will be detained or returned. If you want to avoid fumigation, you can use plywood packaging (fumigation-free). Qiulai has its own fumigation facility, with certificates issued upon shipment.
Which Packaging Requires IPPC Fumigation?
| Packaging Material | Fumigation Required? |
|---|---|
| Solid wood pallets / solid wood crates | Must be fumigated |
| Plywood / multi-layer board crates | Fumigation-free |
| LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) | Fumigation-free |
| OSB (Oriented Strand Board) | Fumigation-free |
How Long Does the Fumigation Process Take?
- After the crate is assembled, send it to the fumigation chamber → Apply fumigant and seal for 24 hours
- Ventilate for 12-24 hours → Ensure fumigant residues meet standards
- Affix IPPC stamp (including treatment method, origin, company code)
- Issue fumigation/disinfection certificate to accompany the shipment
The entire process takes about 2-3 days. Qiulai has its own fumigation facility, ensuring full control.
Important reminder: Some small factories on the market use counterfeit IPPC stamps. If discovered by customs, the entire batch will be returned. Always confirm that the manufacturer has a legitimate IPPC fumigation qualification. Qiulai holds proper qualifications and can provide fumigation certificates.
What Are the Consequences of Not Doing IPPC Fumigation?
If customs find solid wood packaging that has not been fumigated, the consequences are severe:
- Goods will be detained and require supplementary fumigation (delaying shipping schedule)
- The entire shipment may be returned (wasted shipping costs)
- In serious cases, goods may be destroyed (loss of cargo + fines)
- A poor customs clearance record will be noted, leading to inspections for every subsequent shipment
